So far I've achieved 2 out of 3 goals. My life has been an amazing journey. Some find my story too bizarre to believe. I suppose that means I might leave behind an amazing story... One that may echo for eternity. But guess what!? You're in it!

#1 GOAL Be Healthy!

Without health it's hard to be the change the world needs... So let's go back in time to 1983...

The weather was perfect. Hardly any traffic. I was riding into Melbourne Australia on my Honda XL250 trail bike, when a truck driver saw me - but too late! I didn't even have the chance to be scared. And while the collision appeared to happen in slow motion, the pain came fast. Then I blacked out...

It was in the cat scan I regained consciousness. A personal metal womb. Through my screeching voice begging for pain killers, I heard "His spine's like a Violet Crumble chocolate bar, smashed on the end with a mallet."

Morphine had no effect... I had to use my mind.
How was I to know, in pain what I would find...

The truck driver who made the illegal turn lost his license for three months and paid a $200 fine. My price was a lot higher, and yet in hindsight, it was a price I'd pay over...

My spine was well and truly mangled! However it had shattered evenly in both directions, leaving my spinal cord badly damaged, but intact! Yet the challenge I was confronted with was blunt... If I moved in the coming months I'd never walk again.

The doctors would perform experiments on me to see the extent of damage to my spinal cord. I was in constant agony beyond belief. One experiment involved suspending a pin on a cotton thread which would gently be lowered until it came into contact with my chest. It wasn't the sharpness of the pin that caused me to scream out in pain... it was the weight of it!

At nights I would have "elephant shots" of morphine injected into my thigh to try and help me through the night. However, I didn't take too well to it, as it was causing me to hallucinate. One time I didn't know where I was and tried to get out of bed. (I was too weak.) Had I succeeded I would have collapsed on the floor and never walked again.

It was during the night that I turned to meditation and visualisation to control the pain. And amazingly, it seemed to work when the drugs couldn't. Then after six weeks of lying on my back I was gently rolled onto my side. I fainted in pain.

After seven weeks of being bedridden I had a sit-down shower. My dignity was starting to return, something I'd been yearning for. So I told my nurse I'd shower alone. Much later, I regained consciousness with my head over the drain hole. Foolishly, I decided I wasn't going to be discovered like this, so I stood up unassisted and kept this event secret until now!

My trail bike. like my spine, was pretty mangled. The police left it at the scene of the smash with the keys in the ignition. And you guessed it... My pride and joy was stolen! Being a struggling student (academically and financially) after I was released from hospital, I bought a 1000cc motorcycle and secured a part-time job as a motorcycle courier! The crash didn't kill me yet my mother nearly did!

Without this time in hospital I never would have been forced to discover the power of the human mind. So with my health regained, a loving family and my journey to end starvation -

So nearly a quarter of a century after I shattered my spine. After being told that if I moved I'd never walk again. After being told it was a miracle that I even had a chance to recover... I'm happy and healthy with 3 wonderful children. Shattering my spine was truly my "lucky break!" Yet I've also experienced the enduring heartache of the loss no parent ever wants to know... which is why I have goal #2

#2 End Starvation!

Each year the world spends around 10 to 15 times more on the military than it would cost to end starvation. Yet nobody rejoices. Yet what if you helped end starvation? How special would you feel?

The war in Iraq, the coalition of the willing's best attempt yet to "end terrorism" has cost the USA alone $481 billion. Let's round this up to half a trillion dollars all up. Yet that's nothing compared to the cost of global warming that kicks in at $9 trillion.

If ending starvation was on sale, you'd most likely find it at a discount superstore. You see it's a bargain. Where else can you buy such a noble goal as ending starvation for a mere $50 billion a year? The answer is you can't. And as any parent knows (I've got three) there can be no peace when children cry (and die) from hunger...

If just 12 more people every day get clean water and quality calories, starvation will be ended by 2012. Subtract calories from obese countries, add them to starving countries and both survive.

Many of the world leaders I've written to support the goal of ending starvation. Yet starvation isn't a domestic political problem so it never becomes an election commitment. Here's what a few people had to say about my goal...

#3 Make Mathematics Easy!

I once failed math at school and had a teacher tell me I'd never amount to anything. Yet that was before I broke my back and was forced to reset my belief system!

After recovering from my accident I quit my job working in the management consulting industry to read everything I could about the mind and how to use it. To put into practise what I had discovered, I began to teach young children mathematics. I began tutoring in a spare bedroom in my home. Then I began teaching at community centres. It was a pretty strange time of my life because I had no experience teaching and no formal teaching qualifications...

I taught children maths by getting them to close their eyes and imagine fun stories. Without knowing they were easily mastering the subject they hated most. The kids I taught remembered algebraic equations through guided visualisation. After one lesson a 10 year old could do math their teacher coudn't.

So now it's almost 20 years since I said I wanted to change the way the world teaches mathematics. Since then I've also created a completely new system of mathematics that I will be revealing in 2008. It sounds strange, for me, a former math failure to say, yet my new approach to mathematics and my new numeral system can be likened to the change from the Roman I V X L C D and M to the Arabic 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 and 0 we use today.

The only difference is that the transition from Roman to Arabic mathematics took centuries. The transition from Arabic math to WhiteMath (the name of my upcoming numeral system) may take you around LXXVII (77) minutes.

What Next?

I get job offers from time to time that would pay me double what I currently earn at a small not-for-profit health fund. Yet I chose to work in the not-for-profit sector in a health related field. At some stage in the near future I hope to be able to make enough money teaching mathematics online to pursue my last remaining goal of ending starvation.

So in the meantime, you can register for some free mathematics lessons. You can also contemplate what you can do to make YOUR life truly count. Whether it be donate to a disaster relief project or sponsor a child as I have done for 20 years - just do SOMETHING different this year you've never done before.

My personal story, from ordinary to extra-ordinary has only been possible because I opened my mind to the power of goal setting.
